My First Love

Elizabeth Bakanansa

My first love was the best thing that happened to me on my 20th birthday. The best present my parents gave me, was to take on a cruise which was two days. The boat was loaded. Among the people was this handsome young man who seemed like 6ft tall, and180 pounds. He snatched my heart at the first sight. Remember this was my first time to fall in love with a stranger. I had no experience at all on how to get a man’s Attention. I thought of dropping my glass which was full of wine. It worked like magic! The guy came running and tried to make feel comfortable by telling me that it had happened to him too last week. He to k by the hand and asked me to sit with him. His name was David. We exchanged phone numbers, and I went back to my parents before they started looking for me. After awhile, we started dating seriously. My first love taught me a lot of good things and bad ones too. The first thing I learned was patience. One day I went to visit David and he was parking things. "Where are you going"? I asked. He looked at me with a smile and said, all my life I dreamed of going to America. I'm planning to spend two years, and then I’ll come back for my first love. Those words, "my first love", woke my brains up, because I didn't know that I was his first love too. Although, I didn't like the idea of going to America, I had nothing to say since I was not asked for my opinions.

I went home and broke the news to my lovely mother, she was so upset. She took me outside and started yelling at me. "Listen, and listen carefully, there is no way you're going to wait for this runaway boyfriend in my house." My father intervened, and calmed her down by telling her that he was going to do whatever it will take make sure that David marry me before he leaves. Patiently I waited, until he came with his people and paid for my bridal price. In my tradition, if a man paid for your bridal price, you automatically become his wife. David entrusted me to his childhood friend James. I was still waiting for my husband, until my father got sick. We were so poor, and my mother blamed everything on me.

I went to David's friend and asked him for help. He gave me some money, but still it wasn't enough. My father got worse, and I had to go back to James for more money. This time it wasn't easy as I thought. He asked me if I could sleep with him. I refused, and he told to choose between my father's life, and a one night stand. My love for my first love was so strong, and I thought nothing will ever make me loose my faithfulness. That day I had to loose it, because my father was everything in my life. Eventually, my father got better. But guess what? I was pregnant. My mothers force me to go and live with James because she never believed in an absent husband as she used to call him.

James was so happy and told me all the lies about David. He told me that he was married and they were expecting their first child. After two years, David come back to meet his first love. My mother told him that I was married to a rich man not a runaway husband as she used to call him.

At first I was so mad at him, but after he proved his innocence, I felt so ashamed. My first love was still strong. I went back to my parents, my mother was not happy, but my father promised to explain my situation to David. I thought my mistake was unforgivable; our love was stronger than I ever imagined. He took me back, my mother apologized to us and she said that now she believes that true love still exists. Since then, I live with my first love.
