My name is Derron Holness and I was born in Jamaica.
It was a surprise to me when I heard about America
and that I was going there.
My brother sent for me and my brother to come to America.
It was great coming here. I met a lot of different people and
talked to some about jobs. My first job was at UPS. It was great.
I worked there for two years. Then I heard about a job at Worcester
Polytechnic Institute (WPI). My friend and I applied and we both
got jobs. It is great to work there. I got the job in 2001 and
still work there.
My friend said one day, “Derron, you can’t read.” “I
know,” I said. “I never went to school in Jamaica.” She
asked me if I wanted to try school here. She brought me to the
Worcester Adult Learning Center and I met my teacher, Kathy McKee.
She is a great teacher; she helps me a lot. She helped me to
study for my driver’s license and my citizenship test.
I passed both!
I’m still in school. I’m writing sentences and stories
better than ever. I can read my books in class. They get harder
every day. I find answering the questions, after reading, difficult,
but I can figure them out most of the time. At work I can read
many things that I didn’t read before. That helps me every
day.
So my trip to America has been a happy one for me. God bless
Kathy, all the people in America, and God bless America!
