The Fever

Marie Jeudy

I'm from Haiti. It is one of the poorest countries in the world. Some people don't have water in their homes. They have to go to a neighbor's home to get water. They carry water in a container on top of their heads without a cover on it. I think by the time they get to their homes, the water could be contaminated with a lot of germs. It gets very dusty on the road. So many people have gotten sick from the contaminated water from the reservoir.

I was lucky that I was not in that situation. I grew up with my two brothers and my dad. When I was growing up, my father tried his best to make us live comfortably. I was the only girl and also the last born of the family, so I was very much pampered by them. In spite of all this, I still got very sick with a severe fever. My family went through a sad time when I became ill and fell into my dad's and brother's arms. My oldest brother consulted a doctor after I lay in bed for several days without eating. They thought they were going to lose me.

My family was praying to God to make me feel better. After several days spent in the hospital, the illness subsided, but I was still feeling weak and listless when I got home. I couldn't continue with my normal activities for a long time after that. I couldn't attend school for many months. It was a long time before I could feel healthy again.
