In 1981, I was a young woman who had two young
children, and I was pregnant with my third. Things started happening
to my
body. At times the pain in my head was so great; I could not
get out of bed. My husband had no idea what I was going through.
He worked most of the day, and I would stay at my mother's house.
The pain was always there.
The doctor could not do anything about the
pain until the baby was born. A month after I had the baby, I
was admitted to UMass Medical Center. The doctors
said I had a brain tumor on the front of my brain, and it was getting bigger.
The mass of tissue around it was growing. The doctor was talking to me about
this thing that had taken over my body and how I could die. All the time
he was talking, I just sat there thinking abut my children and
who was going to
care for them. How would they make it without their mother?
On December 23, 1981, I had my brain tumor
removed. It was the biggest change in my life. This meant I would
be around to see my children grow up and have
families of their own. This also meant I would be here to live! I still
see the same doctor and the teams that worked on me. With God's
help I will keep
on trying to live this life.
