Rags to Riches

Frederick Sexton

In 1982 there was a kid named Maurice who lived in Boston. Maurice and his family were very poor. They hardly had food to eat, or any clothes to wear. They were so poor they couldn’t even afford to buy oil to put in their furnace to keep the house heated. In order for them to stay warm at night they would have to bundle up as a group under the covers and hold each other tight just to generate heat from their bodies. The conditions were terrible. One night Maurice said “Ma I’m going to make it as a rapper one day, and we’re never going to live under these conditions again” but in her mind, she thought it was ridiculous.

When Maurice was in school, he had no friends because kids in that era didn’t want any part of you if you didn’t have the latest design in clothes, top of the line sneakers, and the most expensive coats. Maurice wasn’t blessed with those kind of luxuries, but he made the best of what he had, which was out of style clothes, and sneakers with holes in them. He even wore clothes that were too small for him and didn’t match in color. During lunchtime at school, no one would sit near Maurice because he never had any food to share. He was just some lonesome poor boy who only wanted to be accepted.

Then one day the school put on a talent show, and no one knew Maurice was in the show until the curtains opened. Maurice came out displaying his rapping skills, and the crowd went wild and crazy, chanting “Go Reese, Go Reese, Go Reese”. It was pandemonium at the show. After the show a representative from Def Jam Records approached Maurice, which all the kids witnessed, and asked Maurice if he wanted to record an album. From there all the kids wanted to be his friend because they didn’t know he had rapping skills like that. But it was too late. Maurice was moving up in the world. One year later he put out his album and everyone from the east to west coast was buying his album. Promoters from all over the world wanted to make reservations and book Maurice to do concerts, so what he did was go back to his school and recruited the same individuals who didn’t want to be his friends back then, and made all of them his personal bodyguards. Maurice went on to sell millions of albums and become one of the biggest entertainers in the music industry. After his music career was over, Maurice traveled all around the world as a public service announcer and sponsor for poor kids growing up in the world. After his duties were over as a public service announcer, Maurice went back home and told his mom, he said “Ma, I told you I would make it as a rapper”!!!!!
